61: Twisted Fairy Tale

The theme is to twist a known fairy tale. I chose Snow White. The group suggested swapping gender roles or doing crossovers, but I went my own way. I've swapped the villain and the hero. Snow White is my villainess, the wicked Shadow. The 'evil' queen is my hero I use for half of #OC-Challenge's contests, Sophi Kanzaki.

So here's how my twisted version of story goes.

One day, the princess was born. Her parents called her Snow Shadow. The queen died and the king eventually remarried to Sophi, making her the queen.

Sophi knew there was something wrong with Snow. She didn't get along with anyone and had a tendency to mutilate the wildlife. So Sophi cast Snow Shadow out of the kingdom, knowing that if Snow had stayed, she'd cause the kingdom's downfall.

Years later, Sophi learned that Snow Shadow had lived. She hatched a plan, poisoning some apples to take to Snow in disguise. Pity Snow beat her to the punch. Snow forced Sophi to eat her own poison apples, killing Sophi and becoming the queen herself.

Totally messed up, right? My kind of dramatic fairy tale.

So this has been preoccupying my time for the last three weeks. I am a glutton for patterns, and I love fabric. This is like the best of both worlds, but for a contest, it's stressful. I didn't think I'd finish it in time! BUT I LOVE IT OMG.

I wanted to use the Disney colors for Snow White, because they're incredibly recognizable. I've added a sort of badass flair to it, giving both girls decorative corsets and awesome strappy shoes. Since the colors are usually what determines good and bad in Disney tales (and often fairy tales), I went with a very sharp light from the side. I think it makes who's good and who's bad very obvious.

All the linework, because it gets a little hard to see all the details on Sophi's dress. Yes, this pic is crappy, but I took it with my cellphone before getting to coloring work.
